What make's Eleni Katz's performances special? Find out at Newport Classical Chamber series

At Newport Classical, we are celebrating a wonderful start to 2024. With our January and February Chamber Series concerts completely at capacity, we are reminded how much support we have from the Newport community and beyond and are honored to be bringing performances by world-class classical musicians, often found on famous stages in larger cities, to the Newport Classical Recital Hall in downtown Newport. Last year, we renovated the Recital Hall stage, and we have heard from several musicians who have performed here that it is one of their favorite places to perform due to the acoustics, striking architecture, as well as the welcoming audiences. We hope you will join us at a concert this spring for a relaxed evening, a glass of wine from Greenvale Vineyards, and some unforgettable music.

Newport Classical’s mission is to bring timeless music for today to the city year-round, through our panoply of programming, including the popular summertime Newport Classical Music Festival which takes place at Newport’s historic mansions and venues (save the date for July 4-21, 2024), our Community Concerts Series which brings free performances to Newport residents right in their own neighborhoods, and Chamber Series concerts presented downtown in our home venue, the Newport Classical Recital Hall.

On March 22, Newport Classical will present Eleni Katz, one of the country’s foremost bassoonists. What makes Eleni’s performances special is her approach to this instrument. Eleni is a classically trained singer and has always believed that the bassoon should emulate the human voice. The Royal Gazette described her playing as “uncannily human.” A native of Iowa City, Iowa, Eleni trained at University of Wisconsin’s Mead Witter School of Music before earning her master’s degree at the Yale School of Music. Her concert in Newport will include music by French composers Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Noël Gallon, and Camille Saint-Saëns alongside Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Deep River and 2024 GRAMMY-winner Jeff Scott’s Elegy for Innocence. She will be joined by pianist Evren Ozel in his return to the Newport Classical stage.
